Today, I found this site that gives me some good insight in to the events that took place while my ancestors lived in this area.
My ancestor, Jerome Fraizer, my 3rd great grandfather on my maternal grandmothers side, was in the USCT (United States Colored Troops) 11th heavy artillery. This regiment was previously the 14th Rhode Island heavy artillery.

That link is from a book that I found in a google search of the regiment.
Jerome Fraizer enlisted on Sept 24, 1863 at age 21. The service record I found on Ancestry.com says that he was freed on April 19, 1861. It says that he was born in Pine Plains, NY which is still mostly farm land to this day. Also it said that his regiment was stationed in Rhode Island.
He was enlisted for 3 years.
