When you start your family tree, you start with the information that you know. I chose to use Ancestry.com as my starting point. This software is pretty user friendly considering how elaborate a family tree can be.
I started entering all of the information I knew.
Both my parents are from Poughkeepsie, NY, which is the town we currently live in. I know information on all of my grandparents and great-grandparents.
My paternal grandmother, CMW, and my mom, LEM, were a really big help collecting more information. As far as my grandmothers family, she pretty much knows everybody all the way back to the sharecroppers. We have been having family reunions for at least 30 years. That side of my family has been extremely close up until recent years.
